The all-new subcompact crossover will slot between the C-HR and RAV4--Look for it later this year at Ourisman Chantilly Toyota near Washington DC and Arlington, VA
Thanks to its proven reputation for reliability, efficiency, safety, and value, the Toyota Corolla has enjoyed one of the longest continuous production runs in the automotive industry. Over the course of five and a half decades, it has earned its spot as the globe's best-selling vehicle nameplate in history. And this year, Toyota is further expanding the Corolla's scope, carving a niche in the subcompact crossover segment with the all-new 2022 Corolla Cross.
Toyota has slated the 2022 Corolla Cross for launch in the Fall-Winter of 2021. And as is common for unreleased models, the automaker hasn't made full specifications available just yet, but there's more than enough information for us to be excited about. Here, we'll give you a summary of what's known up to this point. And we'll certainly be keeping you up-to-date as more details emerge.
Corolla Cross Size and Powertrain
While list as a subcompact crossover, the 2022 Corolla Cross is sized between the standard subcompact and compact classes, larger than the Toyota C-HR and smaller than the RAV4. These dimensions allow the Corolla Cross to offer roomy accommodations for passengers and cargo while maintaining convenient space requirements.
A 169-horsepower 2.0-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine provides the Corolla Cross's motivation, delivering power to the front wheels via a Direct Shift continuously variable transmission. Additionally, the CVT's tuning helps the Corolla Cross achieve an impressive 32 estimated mpg in combined driving and features a physical first gear for a more responsive driving experience.
Furthermore, unlike its smaller C-HR sibling, the Corolla Cross will offer optional all-wheel-drive for improved handling and control in inclement conditions. AWD models also equip a fully independent rear suspension and Toyota's Dynamic Torque Control system, which can distribute up to 50% power to the rear wheels when needed and disengage when not. This intelligent power apportioning allows AWD models to not lose much efficiency, achieving an estimated 30 mpg combined.
Corolla Cross Design and Accommodations
The 2022 Corolla Cross is built on the automaker's TNGA-C platform, giving the crossover easier approachability and entry and driver's a higher viewpoint from behind the wheel. Additionally, the all-new crossover sports a notably assertive exterior aesthetic highlighted by a confident and muscular stance, a distinctive black grille, aggressively narrowed headlight clusters, and protective lower cladding.
Inside its refined and roomy cabin, the Corolla Cross shares a few attributes with its sedan and hatchback siblings, offering available comfort upgrades like SofTex simulated leather upholstery, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. And back seat passengers are sure to appreciate the standard rear HVAC vents, which can heat or cool the second-row area more rapidly. In addition, the 60/40 split-folding rear seats add a flip-down center armrest with integrated cupholders on the XLE trim level.
Corolla Cross Infotainment Features
Like current Corolla models, the 2022 Corolla Cross will offer a standard 7-inch or available 8-inch infotainment system for seamless connectivity, entertainment, and navigation. Furthermore, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrate your compatible smartphone with the central display, providing intuitive access to apps and functions like hands-free calling and texts, streaming and stored music/podcasts, Google or Apple Maps, and more. Additionally, Springfield, VA drivers can replace the standard instrument cluster with a customizable, digital 7-inch Multi-Information Display, as well as equip the road trip playlist-enhancing Audio Plus multimedia system with Remote Connect and a nine-speaker JBL premium sound system.
Corolla Cross Driver-Assistance Technologies
While there's no replacement for staying attentive behind the wheel, having assistance is always a good thing. And Toyota understands that your family's safety isn't just optional, which is why, like all Toyota vehicles, the Corolla Cross will come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of advanced driver aids. Leveraging cutting-edge radar and camera technology, these systems serve to enhance driver awareness, assist hazard detection and avoidance, and mitigate driving fatigue. Standard driver-assistance technologies of the 2022 Corolla Cross include:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Automatic High Beams
- Road Sign Assist
By stepping up just one tier, Vienna, VA, shoppers can add the assistance of Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Additionally, the XLE trim level will include Front and Rear Parking Assist sensors and Rear Automatic Braking.
